Wind speed units: m/s, km/h, mph and knots

Understand wind speed units for drone forecasts. Convert m/s, km/h, mph and knots using formulas and a worked example, then compare values in the same unit.

Four common units

Metres per second (m/s), kilometres per hour (km/h), miles per hour (mph) and knots (kn) all express speed. A knot is one nautical mile per hour. The website converter supports all four; the current app settings offer m/s, km/h and mph.

Use the conversion factors

Multiply m/s by 3.6 to get km/h. One mph equals 0.44704 m/s. One knot equals 1852/3600 m/s. Convert the input to m/s first, then divide by the target unit’s factor. The converter displays two decimal places without rounding intermediate calculations.

Check with a known example

10 m/s becomes 36 km/h, about 22.37 mph and 19.44 knots. In the converter, enter 36 and select km/h: the m/s result should return 10. You can enter a decimal comma or point. Negative values are rejected because this tool converts speed, not a signed velocity component.

Keep the context

Converting a gust into another unit does not turn it into average wind. Keep the original label, height and forecast time with the result. Match the units to the aircraft documentation before making a comparison; the calculator is not a flight clearance or safety score.
